Yves Saint Laurent's death

Yves Saint Laurent, was one of the most influential and enduring designers of the 20th century, he empowered women through his fashion. Saint Laurent died yesterday at his Paris home. He was 71. There is a famous saying in the fashion industry that goes like this: "Chanel gave women freedom" and Saint Laurent "gave them power." He was a libertarian, an anarchist and he transformed women and the way society views women. He was considered the last of a generation among Christian Dior and Coco Chanel from the set who have their never ending influence not only on fashion industry but on everyone's day to day life. He created instant classics that remain stylish decades later.

His most famous contributions are: The famous YSL tuxedo, the trim pantsuits, the see-through blouses, the safari jackets and glamorous gowns.

Saint Laurent was born Aug. 1, 1936, in Oran, Algeria, his father was a shipping executive. At the age of 17, he won first prize in a contest sponsored by the International Wool Secretariat for a cocktail dress design. A year later in 1954, he enrolled at the Chambre Syndicale school of haute couture, but it lasted only three months. He was introduced to Christian Dior and Dior was so impressed with Saint Laurent's talent that he hired him on the spot. When Dior died suddenly in 1957, Saint Laurent was named head of the House of Dior at the age of 21. He opened his own haute couture fashion house with Berge in 1962. The pair later started a chain of Rive Gauche ready-to-wear boutiques. Saint Laurent's simple navy blue pea coat over white pants, which the designer first showed in 1962, was one of his hallmarks. His "smoking," or tuxedo jacket, of 1966 remade the tux as a high fashion statement for both sexes. It remained the designer's trademark item and was updated yearly until he retired.

Saint Laurent's rising star was eternalized in 1983, when the Metropolitan Museum of Art devoted a show to his work, the first ever to a living designer. He was awarded the Legion d'Honneur in 1985.

"I've known fear and terrible solitude," he said. "Tranquilizers and drugs, those phony friends. The prison of depression and hospitals. I've emerged from all this, dazzled but sober."

LÓNG THE AUTHENTIC PERSIAN SCARF

History of "Long"!

The "Long" is a rectangular fabric made of cotton and hemp, with a black hue on a red background.

Beginning from 2000 years ago, Iranians wore two kinds of aprons: one made of leather used specifically by laborers and soldiers, and the other made of fabric (mostly hemp, though occasionally from soft wool) for officials and laymen. Throughout the ages, the hemp apron evolved into a square pattern that served to distinguish Iranians from the others. Over the course of history, Iranian settlements in the fertile regions of Qazvin succeeded in discovering the secret to dying these fabrics. From then on, Iranian loincloths, much like their traditional carpets, took on a special red hue that is permanent in nature.

The red-colored hues of Iranian "Longs" are derived from a wild flower that is found in the central and southern regions of the country. In the spring, young ladies would collect these flowers and boil them in large cauldrons. The red hue that would emerge was a fiery one that remains permanently if washed in special spring waters. From the 19th century onward, red-colored Longs that distinguished Persians from other Muslims were used exclusively in baths located in gymnasiums (zoor-khaneh) dedicated to traditional Iranian martial arts.

During traditional wrestling matches between two mighty opponents, the referee would stop the match by throwing a long in the middle of the arena before separating the opponents and declaring the winner.

BlackList's frontman Josh Strawn wears NIMANY on the stage!
One of Nima's favorite NYC bands and inspired by groups such as The Comsat Angels, The Manic Street Preachers, Suede, The Sound, and For Against, Blacklist is simultaneously celebratory and melancholy, replacing the hysterical protest song of the 20th century with anthems for a new generation weaned on amusement and starved for confrontation.

"I came across NIMANY designs (if I remember correctly) because I keep up as best I can with the underground rock scene in Iran. The only way to do this is via the Internet, and it just happened that one day I came across a site with photos of his work. Persian calligraphy is gorgeous and NIMANY's stylistic interpretations of it are very cool, so of course I was very taken with his work. It goes without saying that oftentimes the fashion world is little more than superficial, overpriced absurdity, but I think this lable is visually attractive and positions fashion in a place where it has the power to be political without sacrificing depth or aesthetics. Generally when people in fashion try to get political, they're just branding self-righteousness. NIMANY, on the other hand is trafficking in symbols and emblems that subversively expose the sophistication and modernity of a culture and language that's by and large misrepresented in the West. So instead of being a politics of consumerist self-satisfaction, I see what they're doing as an excellent strike back to our media and popular culture's lack of understanding and appreciation for Iran's art and history.

And the best part about it is that it works rather effortlessly at this and doesn't beat you over the head. But in the end, I dig their designs because I think they're really fantastic looking. Sort of like Blacklist tunes--if you want to read my lyrics for the subtexts and hear us as a political band, you can certainly do that and you can practically get a reading list from our songs (Ibn Rushd, Omar Khayyam, George Orwell, Victor Serge, Arjun Appadurai, Ramin Jahanbegloo, Salman Rushdie, Slavoj Zizek, just to give you the short list). But if you just like the music, that works too. You don't have to know who Akbar Ganji and Zakia Zaki are to appreciate 'When Worlds Collide' by us. Same with NIMANY, you don't even have to know it's Persian to know that you love the way it looks. In other words, it is form or melody that succeeds first--if the more thought out ideas and agendas work too, they are only able to do so because the rest is already in place and one's appreciation of one shouldn't condition too much your ability to appreciate the other. That's what I try to do with our music and it's how I feel about NIMANY's project." says Josh Strawn of Blacklist.

This past Monday NIMANY rolled out the red carpet and hosted the hottest party in town at New York hotspot RUNWAY. It was a night full of beautiful people, fabulous times, and, of course, great fashion. The occasion was NIMANY creator, Nima Behnoud's Birthday – and what better gift can you get as a designer than to see 12 models showing off your designs on the catwalk? Indeed, in anticipation of Fashion Week, the highlight of the night was a full-out fashion show with leggy models strutting their stuff in the newest NIMANY designs. The evening was a complete success, and no doubt, by the end of the night every partygoer was very aware that T-shirts isn't all NIMANY can do – they throw one hell of a party too.

UNDERGROUND NIGHT IN LONDON

London, October 11th 2006, the Cobden Club hosted the “Underground Movement” show focusing on Rock, Hip-Hop, and Fashion. Opening the night were the Abjeez with their underground world pop sound that featured their clever and rebellious message.

NIMANY also launched a new collection, but before showcasing the new material; NIMA treated the crowed to a brief video that covered the evolution of NIMANY since its birth in 2004. Then came the new collection, with the help of 6 London based runway models, the “Underground” theme collection was released. As a treat NIMA made available selected items from the new collection for sale, which in turn sold out within an hour.

And to close the night, Zedbazi a controversial Hip-Hop band took the stage with their raw social and explicit lyrics about the underground life of youngsters in Tehran.

The Nimany line of handmade tshirts continues to pile up fans in the fashion world. One of Nimany's latest fans is Phillip Bloch. Voted one of Cosmopolitan's "Four Most Influencial Men in Fashion", Phillip has styled for "A" list celebrities such as: Halle Berry, Jim Carrey, John Travolta, Sandra Bullock, Faye Dunaway, Salma Hayek, Nicole Kidman, Drew Barrymore, etc...

He appears regularly on most major network talk shows and is frequently featured on VH1 and MTV (" Newlyweds", "Punk'd", "House of Style - Mission Makeover", and "Becoming"). He is widely considered to be New York's premier fashion stylist, and his witty humor and unique insight into fashion makes him one of the most quoted stylists in the Fashion industry.

Word up: the Fugees are back after nearly a decade with their new single “Take It Easy”, a sweet taste of the group's upcoming album, which will be released in a few months. But hip hop’s ultimate supremos are not only masters of the music trade – they have their rythmatic fingers in fashion too. Known for their avant-garde, refugee apparel, impeccable taste in new styles and their distinguishable urban street look, they have carved their own niche, spawning many envious imitators and designer-clad doppelgangers (Black Eyed Peas, anyone?).

So just where do they stock up on their look de jour? NIMANY, of course. Apparently, Pras loves NIMANY’s Middle Eastern influenced, handmade t-shirts: “It's the writings, the forms, the shapes that makes NIMANY different,” he gushes (bless).

Which supermodel and fashion wonderwoman was caught getting all steamy over a handmade NIMANY tee, at an exclusive Victoria's Secret fashion show last week? HEIDI KLUM. Apparently, the lusty lingerie model was agog when she met Nima Behnoud and clocked his handmade t-shirt, gushing: "Wow! That's hot! Who makes these?"

The incredibly flattering compliment is pretty much the cherry on the cake. Not only is Heidi the belle of the fashion world but she's also a judge and the executive producer of "Project Runway", a new reality TV series, about fashion designers, currently being broadcast across the US.

Klum isn't the only one impressed by the works of NIMANY either. Tuned into the styles of the street, the label has moved from bohemian chic and into Middle Eastern icons, motifs and slogans just as the fashunista crew flutter away from Indian influences and flock towards all Southwest Asia garb. This is proof positive that NIMANY is well and truly ahead of the curve and down with the street, natch.

Fred Segal is the starting point for a day of celebrity-stalking. It has been a hotbed of celebrity-sanctioned casualwear trends. The store buyers take chances on emerging talent, and as a result, have launched cutting-edge looks from Jared Gold, Alicia Lawhon (both former clerks here) on up to international names like Martin Margiela. Every rock star reaches the point where he no longer wants to look like his own fans. Lords, a nondescript Lower Melrose menswear shop, has spent the past decade proffering 100-percent handmade clothing to rock stars and Hollywood royalty. Though the novice client would never admit it. At Lords, that means putting them in custom suits that can hit $8,000 and jeans that can reach $750. Jaber, who was schooled in Birmingham, applies traditional English tailoring techniques not only to suits but denim, leather and t-shirts. Next spring the brand will reopen in the former Le Colonial building in West Hollywood, with a full men's and women's collection, second-tier sportswear line, and in-house restaurant.

It’s a question that most designers, and especially celebrities turned designers, face. Should they create clothes that their fans will dig, or should they veer towards their own sense of style and aesthetics? Nicky Hilton's clothing line “CHICK”, launched in 2005 in partnership with BenVin Industries, has had remarkable sales at New York’s MACY’s stores.

Last week at a party in NYC, Nima, creative director of NIMANY clothing line, had a chat with Nicky, who unlike most celebrity designers, has actually had formal training. In fact, the two both graduated from the prestigious Fashion Institute of Technology. Along with unique embroidered t-shirts and tanks, tie-dyed shirts and painted jeans are trademarks of “CHICK”. She admits that her designs have a flair for humor but she describes it as "sophisticated with a cool edge." Likewise, Nima characterizes his line as “chic with a cultural edge”. “Today, when street people are increasingly eager to stand out from the crowd, to showcase their interests and passions more and more through their fashion choices,” he goes on to say, “that’s when fashion becomes exciting”. What better way to let them do that than by giving them the fresh and hip styles of NIMANY's handmade tees?

NIMANY T-shirts are making quite a buzz in New York City’s fashion hive. Mixing Persian typography and ancient Middle Eastern icons with a post-punk fashion look, no two tees are the same.

What’s more, celebrities are flocking to Nima’s designs like bees to honey – Pras Michel of the Fugees, supermodel Heidi Klum and Alexandra Richards (Keith Richard's daughter), all have their own.

NIMANY founder and designer Nima Behnoud began his trade with a series of basic silk screening experiments on canvas, stretched over frames and treated solely as artwork in the form of paintings. He created these handmade t-shirts for himself, two years ago, and wore them everywhere he went – from fundraisers to posh NYC parties.

Starting with a series of compliments and questions about the origins of the t-shirts, he later tuned into a demand of a considerable bunch and launched back into the studio where it all began: Fashion Institute of Technology's Screen Printing and sewing lab. He spent hours in that studio where he discovered his passion for design. Showcasing his first collection, consisting of less than 15 t-shirts, on a fundraiser, he sold every single t-shirt and received many more compliments.

The inspiration behind this work is founded in ancient Persian typography, classical poetry and Middle Eastern icons, created in tandem with modern fashion elements and guidelines and slowly creating its own niche. Because of Nima's endless fascination with the look and energy of the underground and post-punk fashion scenes, he decided to grow the concept from a simple piece of hanging art, to a wearable piece of priceless fashion.

Nima handpicks special cut tees, deconstructs their pattern and modifies their colors through a variety of dying techniques to ensure that every T-shirt is unique to its owner.

Last year in MAXIM magazine, NIMANY t-shirts were featured alongside Calvin Klein, Diesel and Guess, as the “essential” t-shirts of the year. This is much more than an untouched arena: it’s a genre of its own. The popularity of the t-shirts is a good indicator of how the fashion hungry audience who are hunting for the next unique thing feel about these t-shirts.
